In the fall of 2008, Andrew Stawicki, CEO of PhotoSensitive presented at the Mississauga Camera Club.  Andrew explained that Photosensitive is a collective of photographers who turn their cameras and their talents to social concerns.  They have covered topics from cancer, child poverty, and water, HIV/AIDS to name a few.

Andrew had a great impact on the camera club that evening.  He planted a seed of an idea that has since grown.  He inspired and motivated people that they too could step forward and give back to their community through their camera and their talents.

This was the beginning of the Nurses at Work Exhibition.

Kay Woollam was one of the first to put her hand up to say she wanted to get involved in such a project.  Kay, with the help and support of many others, brainstormed and reviewed ideas and social causes to photograph.  In the end the nursing profession was chosen.  Kay worked her connections and was finally introduced to Cathy Dibert, Director of Nursing, Trillium Health Centre.

Cathy embraced the ideas and Kay’s plans for the project.  Through Cathy, arrangements were made to photograph different areas of the hospital.  Fourteen photographers from the Mississauga Camera club volunteered to participate in this unique series of photo shoots.  The photographers were grouped into teams and were deployed to the Internal Medicine, Intensive Care Unit, Oncology, Continuing Care, Orthopaedic and Cardiac Surgery wards.

The next step was finding a venue to exhibit the images.  Wendy Baillie, Chair of the Club Print Competitions, was currently in discussions with the curator at the Mississauga Living Art Centre regarding a proposed MCC photography exhibition.  Listed within this exhibition proposal of upcoming exhibitions was the Nurses at Work project.  Wendy shared with the curator the background of the project and project photos.

This was the next pivotal point in Nurses at Work Exhibition.

With Wendy as the prime conduit to the LAC, she guided the photographers on the strategy and details for a professional exhibition of photographic art.  Images were edited, artist statements and bios were crafted, technical hurdles were handled and 46 images were finally selected for the Exhibition.

Concurrently a sponsorship team was set in motion to find the funds for the printing, mounting, promoting and exhibiting expenses. We would like to thank the corporate and individual sponsors for their generosity:

At this point in time, we have not met our funding obligations and we continue to look for contributions from corporate and individual sponsors.  If you can help, please give your cheque, payable to the Mississauga Camera Club, to Myra Jones, MCC Treasurer.  We thank you for your generous support.

Now the hard work has finally paid off and 14 photographers and the Mississauga Camera Club presents the exhibition Nurses at Work.

The Nurses at Work Exhibition opens on Thursday September 9, 2010 and will run until November 7, 2010.  Everyone is invited to the Exhibition and the Opening.  Details for the gallery are below.
